Kim Munn
OWNER & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
I’ve been dancing ALL of my life. I put on my first pair of dance shoes at age two and started competing at age seven. During that time, I won ten Grand National championships, was named Miss Kids Artistic Review, Miss Stars of Tomorrow, Miss Showbiz, and received many other top-ten soloist awards. In October of 2002, I was featured in the issue of Dance Spirit Magazine as one of the 50 national future stars.
I’m a Quad Cities native. I graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 2002, and in 2005, I received my Sports Management degree from St. Ambrose University. To further my dancing career, I attended Dance Masters of America Teacher Training School and received my graduate diploma of dance education in tap, jazz and ballet.
I was a founding coach of the multi-state winning Pleasant Valley Platinum dance team, which I coached for 11 years. My choreography has won numerous awards throughout the country. I also enjoy judging at various national dance competitions all over the country each year. I’m a proud founding member of GIFT of the Arts Foundation, which provides the arts to those less fortunate. I also founded the national award-winning all star dance team Powerhouse Elite at ATB.
My life’s mission has been to create an environment where young people can learn who they are, and begin a path that leads them to changing the world. I have always taken pride in teaching my dancers not only the best technique possible, but also how to be the best version of themselves. My students, the parents and my amazing staff continue to make me a better version of myself than I ever dreamed possible - to be able to give even a fraction of that back is the biggest pleasure of my life.
When I’m not teaching, I live in Bettendorf with my husband Rob, and our unbelievable children, Sam and Maicey. The three of them continue to make my world go round.
Our Choreographers / Instructors
I find passion in sharing everything I’ve learned through my dance experience as a student and a professional. More than that though, I love supporting these kids from the time they enter the studio to the time they graduate. I can’t imagine a better place to do all of this than Above The Barre Dance Academy.
I have a passion for dance that I want to instill in my students. I have a passion for art that I hope they learn to love. And I have a passion to perform and make others around me successful.
Parents often ask me what keeps me coming back. The answer is easy. Seeing a dancer smile when they finally figure out the right step. Consulting them when they are sad because they had a hard day. And, the joy in their face as they light up the stage.
My greatest job in working with children is watching them grow and inspiring them to do great things. There is nothing more humbling than when a student graduates and becomes a teacher or a coach because I inspired them. What they don’t realize is their hard-work and determination inspire me.
Instructors
I have been dancing since the age of two and my love and passion for dance has only kept growing. I have danced at the recreational, competitive, and collegiate levels and I am so excited to have the opportunity to be able to share my knowledge with the students at Above the Barre Dance Academy, and to be able to help each student learn and grow in their own dance careers. I am thrilled to share my love and passion for dance with each student and to create new and exciting memories in the dance studio.
Having this opportunity to teach all of your little children is incredible. I want to be an encouraging teacher that keeps their love and passion for dance growing like all my teachers have done for me.
I believe in positivity, family and creativity! All key elements of dance.
As an instructor, attention to detail ranks on the top of my list. The slightest change in a head position, arm, or breathe can make the movement that much more powerful. The greatest feeling comes when all the pieces work together: passion, strength, weakness, determination, confidence, discipline, demand, physicality, mentally, and heart. That is what I take pride in....that, is ballet.
Here at ATB I hope my students learn the most important thing is to be kind and respectful to each other and love oneself. They will also learn the harder you work, the farther you will go. Combine that with technique and dedication and it’s combination made for success!
I love the opportunity to work with young dancers at ATB. My passion is coaching individuals, young and mature, to help each one of them reach their highest potential through sports, activities, lifestyle and health.
Knowing I played a role in helping these kids achieve their goals is indescribable. I hope my students learn dance, but even more, I hope they learn to do it while having fun. That’s all that matters!
Administration
Most of the time you’ll see me working in the office at ATB - a job I really enjoy. But on competition weekends, you’ll see me in my favorite role, being a mom to my ATB dancer.
ATB was our families dream and together we created this environment which is rich in culture, passion, outstanding teaching and most of all love.
